Sculpture Garden (NO BOOZE)
This past Friday, Park Police were in force at the National Sculpture Garden, checking every bag that came in for outside booze. Now I have been going to the Jazz in the Park for the past four years and the first couple years it wasn't crowded and you could bring in whatever, but lately it has been invaded by yuppies in groups, there was no place to sit or stand it was that crowded, the lines for the bar was just wrong! So when I go down there, I take my picnic out on the Mall, because you can still hear the music from the park, but you won't have the crowd.
So be fore warned before you head out this Friday to Jazz in the Park.

The Festival is held outdoors on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., between the Smithsonian museums. There is no admission charge. Visitors should dress for hot and humid weather. Chris Martin:Painting BIG
Chris Martin’s paintings are tactile and stitched-together, incorporating found objects and collage into their abstract geometries and rhythmic patterns. His works relate to the physical world as much as to his own internal landscape of memories and experiences, which draw from music, literature, and the human relationship to the natural world. Martin’s project for the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Painting Big, presents his work in the form of a three-part exhibition. One portion brings together large-scale works from the past nine years; another is a dense assemblage of small paintings in the Rotunda on view through August 28; the third presents a new body of work: a site-specific installation of monumental paintings in the museum’s central atrium. Three paintings, each 26 feet high, will be suspended from the second floor of the museum to the ground, creating a vibrant “room” of color and pattern in the public space of the gallery.
Although abstract, Martin’s paintings are a direct response to the physical world around him. Many of his
works integrate objects from his immediate environment into their surfaces, including kitchen utensils, records, photographs, and Persian carpets. The works are as much about daily life—music, travel, and language—as they are about mythology, storytelling, the endurance of symbols, and the role of painting in art history.
Martin’s interest in bringing painting into the realm of lived experience and his own history of performance are essential elements of his work. In the 1970s and 1980s, he created collaborative paintings during Happenings with other artists and musicians. He has placed works in bus stops, on the sides of buildings, and in nightclubs, fabricating them with phosphorescent paint to respond to the lighting and conditions of the location. He has taken large-scale paintings for “walks” around the block, involving his neighbors and local shopkeepers in creating the meaning and experience of his work. In more traditional gallery spaces, Martin has blurred the distinction between the art object and the viewer, placing paintings on floors, ceilings, and displayed among household objects.Originally from Washington, D.C., Martin grew up visiting the Corcoran. His memories of seeing ambitious sculptural installations in the Corcoran’s central atrium have inspired his ideas for this exhibition, and his paintings directly engage the architecture and history of the museum. This is Martin’s first one-artist museum exhibition.
Chris Martin was born in Washington D.C. in 1954. From 1972–75 he attended Yale University, and in 1992 attained a BFA, Certificate of Art Therapy from the School of Visual Arts, New York. Martin has lived and worked in New York City since 1976 and has been exhibiting actively in the United States since the early 1980s. Recent projects include Joe Bradley & Chris Martin at Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York, 2010, and a one-artist exhibition of large-scale paintings and drawings at KOW Berlin, Germany, 2009. Martin’s works have also been included in many group exhibitions includingAbstract America at the Saatchi Gallery, London, 2009; Shape Shifters at the University of North Carolina, Pembroke, NC, 2008; The Painted World at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, NY, 2005; andCurrent Undercurrents: Working in Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY, 1997. Martin has been the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships including the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, 2002, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award, 1999.

FRINGE FESTIVAL
Capital Fringe Festival is the only major unjuried, self-producing, open-access Festival in the Washington, DC area and occurs in July each year. The Fringe Festival provides all artists, whether new or established, a venue to express and develop their talents and artistic visions in total freedom.
FRINGE TRAINING FACTORY
Twice each year, Capital Fringe produces a performance series focusing on contemporary works by local, national and international independent performing artists. In addition, we work with 30 underprivileged youth creating new works in the performing arts through the Fringe Training Factory Youth-Led Producers.
Capital Fringe received the 2007 Mayor’s Arts Award for Innovation in the Arts, the 2007 Momentum Award from the Downtown DC BID, and was awarded the 2011 Mayor’s Arts Award for Excellence in Service to the Arts.

ArtJamz
For only $48 participants receive a canvas that they get to keep, plus acrylics paints, art materials, light hors d’oeuvres, vitaminwater zero, great music and a chance to mingle with other intrepid creators. Alcoholic drinks are not included but are available throughout the session at an onsite bar. Sessions run four nights July 6, 7, 8 and 9 from 6:30PM to 10:00PM.
The newly re-designed Dunes event space is located directly above the former Social restaurant a few blocks north of the heart of Columbia Heights Metro. The 1,800 square foot open venue with a state of the art sound system and fully-functioning bar area is the perfect place for a creative night of eating, drinking, creating, and mingling.

Four artists’ expressions through uniquely different mediums
June 23 – July 24
Opening Reception: Thursday, June 23, 6:30 – 8:30pm
Patrick Hughes, Eve Stockton, Sondra Arkin and Natasha Karpinskaia each approach their respective artistic spaces in ways not normally featured at Long View Gallery. From wood block printing to encaustics, monotypes and reverspectives, these artists are pushing the boundaries of their respective processes.
Patrick Hughes’ respective pieces shockingly spring to life on the wall. The works approach perspective in a unique manner, elevating these static paintings to what seem like moving pictures. Hughes succeeds in creating the illusion of movement in his hallways, canyons and walls through a unique method of painting the forward most sections of his three dimensional constructions as the shadows, and the furthest back sections as the light, hence reverspectives. His sleight of the hand is astounding, allowing the walls in his work to swivel and slide depending on the viewer’s position.
Eve Stockton’s multi-layered wood block prints represent a unique approach to a traditional process. Her studies in science and love of nature combine to create a contemporary and unexpected result. The scale of these works is mesmerizing, a true testament to her mastery of this art form.

Patrick Hughes, Eve Stockton, Sondra Arkin and Natasha Karpinskaia each approach their respective artistic spaces in ways not normally featured at Long View Gallery. From wood block printing to encaustics, monotypes and reverspectives, these artists are pushing the boundaries of their respective processes.
Patrick Hughes’ respective pieces shockingly spring to life on the wall. The works approach perspective in a unique manner, elevating these static paintings to what seem like moving pictures. Hughes succeeds in creating the illusion of movement in his hallways, canyons and walls through a unique method of painting the forward most sections of his three dimensional constructions as the shadows, and the furthest back sections as the light, hence reverspectives. His sleight of the hand is astounding, allowing the walls in his work to swivel and slide depending on the viewer’s position.
Eve Stockton’s multi-layered wood block prints represent a unique approach to a traditional process. Her studies in science and love of nature combine to create a contemporary and unexpected result. The scale of these works is mesmerizing, a true testament to her mastery of this art form.
