Spring is here and the trees are blooming so is that smelly one down the street. wait they are all over DC. Yes DC is filled with Ginkgo trees and when they bloom they emit a foul smell in the air. The District Department of Transportation’s Urban Forestry Administration is now going around the city spraying female ginkgo fruit trees. The fruit on the trees can carry a very unpleasant smell.
The spraying started in Wards 1, 2 and 6 during the overnight hours Tuesday. That’s where female ginkgo trees are most prevalent. The crews will continue to spray in Wards 4, 3, 7, 8 and 5 the rest of the week.
DDOT Trees is using the same spray that has been used the past several years. There will be no need for residents to move vehicles parked on the streets. For additional information, residents can contact DDOT Trees at 202-671-5133.
