8pm- 12am
A musical evening featuring the choicest world music grooves from bands based in the DC-MD-VA region. Live music with influences from Africa, South America and the United States will include performances by Afro-pop maestros Elikeh, DC-based Brazilian band Alma Tropicália and raw southern soul from Baltimore’s Bellevederes.
Elikeh
Elikeh mixes Afro-beat with traditional Togolese polyrhythms to produce captivating tunes that are as listenable as they are danceable. Although based in indigenous traditions, Elikeh’s music has no borders, exploring global themes and personal odysseys.
“A band of D.C.-area musicians present us with a modern form of groovy, jazzy, and dance-friendly rhythms…Elikeh taps into the same historical energy of Afro-beat bands of long ago. Yet, Elikeh is new, refreshing, and distinct.”
Matthew Forss, Inside World Music (7.11.10)

Alma Tropicália
Alma Tropicália (Portuguese for Tropicália Soul) is a new creative project and DC's first ever tribute to the classic Brazilian 1960's tropicália movement. The group combines traditional Brazilian rhythms with the outrageous sounds of psychedelic pop - equal parts samba, bossa nova, forró and rock 'n' roll. Alma Tropicália is fronted by Elin, a renowned vocalist and master of Brazilian styles, who has toured the world and led her own groups at the Blue Note, Lincoln Center, and other top venues. Elin is backed by a group of the city's finest performers of Música Popular Brasileira. Together they delve deep into this mind-altering musical movement to deliver a mix of tropicália-inspired originals, as well as classic and rarely heard songs by Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Tom Zé, Os Novos Baianos, and more, filtered through the group's signature noise rock sound.

The Bellevederes
“It all starts with the emcee, a sadly lost part of the modern musical landscape. The Bellevederes employ an old school style Master of Ceremonies to make sure, from the moment they take the stage, you know you're not seeing any old cover band. Getting the crowd into the groove is just the first step in the band's master plan to take you back to a time when music was funky, soulful, and just plain fun. Evoking the sounds of Nancy Wilson, Ray Charles, the Meters, and Aretha Franklin, just to name a few, the group's three-piece horn section, crunchy keyboards, and stand-out lead vocals channel the very best of Stax-era R&B, and the group creates a vibe that makes it damn near impossible to stand still once they take the stage.”
