DC’s performance art explosion is taking to the pool with SynchroSwim 2013, the third iteration of WPA’s synchronized swimming performance art competition! Typically, synchronized swimming demands advanced water skills and requires great strength, endurance, flexibility, grace, artistry, and precise timing, as well as exceptional breath control. At WPA’s SynchroSwim, we celebrate creativity and enthusiasm. Past performances have included a biting critique of BP’s role in the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, a celebration of the music of Van Halen, an excerpt from Fluid Movement’s Jason and the Aquanauts: 20,000 Legs Over The Sea, and even a performance by a real live Synchronized Swimming team. WPA is pleased to welcome Arvind Manocha, President and CEO of Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts; Scott Simon, Peabody Award-winning host of NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday, who once interviewed Esther Williams; and Molly Smith, Artistic Director of Arena Stage as this year’s judges. The judges will rank the teams on a scale of 1 to 10 in two categories: Execution (the skill and coherence of their performance) and Visual Spectacle (the outrageousness of the team’s costumes and performance). Prizes are awarded in these two categories, as well as for crowd favorite, which is decided by applause. - See more at: http://wpadc.org/category/upcoming/#sthash.Mokub07Y.dpuf
