The DC Latino Collective is more than your typical art collective – they’re a family. The Collective is part of a larger, tight-knit community of artists creating poetry, music, plays, paintings and more. These artists represent the creative community coming out of the Columbia Heights, Adams Morgan and Mount Pleasant neighborhoods for the past 30 years.
This next Friday, May 4 (Cuatro de Mayo), 7-11pm The Fridge will celebrate the opening of The DC Latino Collective Art Show. The party will bring together all facets of this community – music by Machetres, a performance by Quique Aviles and, of course, the Collective’s artwork. And you can find Quique again on May 26 when he will host a bilingual night of poetry on at 7pm.
The DC Latino Collective is brothers Mauricio Lopez and UNJUANTED (Juan Lopez) and their compatriot Vicente Herrera. The artists will present 30 new paintings on canvas in styles such as surrealism and abstract expressionism, inspired by artists including Picasso, Salvador Dali, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. The works express wonder, family, memories. You'll be struck first by the rich colors – the art is saturated with crimson, olive, saffron, indigo – and the distinct viewpoint of each artist, rooted in their shared histories.
