Jessica Cebra: CAVE
Jessica Cebra: CAVE
December 14, 2013 - January 25, 2014
Opening Reception:
Saturday, December 14, 6-8pm
Artist Talk:
Saturday, January 18, 3pm
Continuing our commitment to highlight the work of exceptional DC-based emerging artists, Transformer's 11th Annual DC Artist Solo Exhibition presents the work of Jessica Cebra in her first solo exhibition.
Jessica Cebra transforms the gallery space into a fantastical constructed cave, obsessively plastered with imagery drawn from the artist's personal museum souvenir postcard collection. Inside the cave, the legacy and stability of institutionalized narratives of art history are distorted and embellished to obscurity, covered in paper mosaic and collage - a fabricated shrine to impermanence. Fascinated by how history and collective memory are shaped by the ways we collect, preserve and present cultural artifacts, Cebra explores notions of impermanence, growth and decay by appropriating and manipulating imagery of man-made iconic idealizations, monumentality, and opulent materiality in the face of larger natural forces.
"I have been interested in memorials and reliquaries, things that preserve the remains of the past, or things that point to the past and insist on being remembered. How will the whole of human existence be memorialized?" ponders Cebra. Having studied Library Science, archives management and historic preservation, she understands that collecting, arranging, categorizing, preserving and exhibiting objects is as important as the significance of the artifacts themselves.
EXHIBITION HOURS: Wednesday-Saturday, 12-6pm and by appointment. Transformer will be closed December 23, 2013 - January 6, 2014

DEWALTA:
Deeply entrenched in the collaborative nature of the European electronic music scene, David Koch still feels the echoes of the formative years he spent sneaking into jazz bars underage to jam on his saxophone with fellow musicians. With years of professional training and creative experience behind him, his output as DeWalta applies his considerable skills to the punch and funk of the dancefloor.
From his own Meander label to Cynosure, Vakant, Kalk Pets and Haunt, David’s warm and playful productions have reached ears the world over, helped in no small part by appearances on compilations by Seth Troxler and Cassy. With his instrumental talents also loaned to the likes of Deadbeat, The Mole and Dave Turov, and his engineering skills coming to bear on the music of Tolga Fidan amongst others, over the past five years David has created a strong identity for himself in the crowded European house and techno scene.

CRACK Trip
Buckle your seatbelts—and grab your barf bags -- CRACK is back with a travel-themed variety show that promises to be very bumpy.
CRACK, DC’s most absurd and offensive performance group, returns to the stage on Saturday, December 7, with CRACK TRIP—their new variety show that features over a dozen performers lampooning global destinations. As usual, the 90-minute cabaret show takes place at TOWN DANCEBOUTIQUE, in Washington, DC.
Your tour guides for the evening are the notorious hosts of CRACK—drag queen SUMMER CAMP (aka SHEA VAN HORN), CHRIS FARRIS, and KARL MARKS. The traveling trio embarks on a trip to fulfill sickly Summer Camp's last wish to see the world before she dies. Join them as they take the audience around the world in 90 minutes, stopping along the way to stamp their passports in Canada, London, India, Russia, Kiev, Saudi Arabia, and other seedy crevices of the globe.
The line-up of culture-mocking performers includes recently-crowned Best Drag Queen in DC, HEIDI GLUM, as well as Capital Fringe Fest darlings ERIC TIPLER and RYAN PATRICK. Other unofficial "amb-ASS-adors" include notorious DC favorites PU$$Y NOIR, JEZZIBELL JAXKNIFE, THE LADY BEAVER, and the reigning Miss CRACK, ANNE PHETAMINE, among others. Also returning to the CRACK stage— fresh from her award-winning musical comedy tour—is the illustrious SUNRIZE HIGHWAY who has headlined around the world with productions that received critical acclaim from NY Newsday, Time Out NY, and HX Magazine.
Known for its low budget set designs that resemble middle-school theater productions, CRACK has gone even more immature in its design—enlisting the help of a local pre-K class to paint the backdrop that acts as the tour map for the travelers with wanderlust.
Doors open at 9 PM, and the show starts at 10 PM. Audience members are encouraged to arrive early if they want a seat as cabaret seating is limited, with plenty of standing room available. During the pre-show, the audience is treated to a thematic movie and music while they sip on cocktails provided by the bar staff at Town.
Anyone with a craving for the bizarre and shocking, should not want miss this special performance event that only happens a couple times each year. As usual, the show combines imaginative videos, off-the-wall drag acts, and audience participation—all embracing CRACK’s warped sense of humor and penchant for the profane. Tickets (available at the door) are $10 and include entrance to Town after the show, where DJ MATT BAILER (MIXTAPE, PEACH PIT) will be spinning upstairs.

INFORMATION ABOUT CRACK
CRACK is a nonprofit theater group that describes itself as a "low budget mess of stage and screen." Since debuting in 2006, CRACK shows have drawn a cross-section of Washington’s alternative communities and provided an opportunity for local performers who have fallen through the "cracks" of traditional theater to showcase their hidden—and sometimes questionable—talents. CRACK has carved out a unique niche in DC’s performance scene, having produced cabaret shows and short films that have been described as “irreverent,” “over-the-top,” and “sophomoric.”
CRACK is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.
