Homage to Michelle
Opening Reception this Saturday
January 12, 6-8pm
On view Through February 9

In a nod to the upcoming inauguration, The Fridge opens Laura Elkins’ Homage to Michelle in The Mini-Fridge, the newly opened space at the gallery. The artist will show a retrospective of works inspired by Michelle Obama during the first administration. The artworks included showcase different series’ from Laura’s larger body of work The White House Collection wherein the artist paints herself as first ladies. Her work addresses larger social and cultural issues, including current events. ForHomage to Michelle, selections of Laura painted as Michelle Obama will be on view.

Laura began The White House Collection when she took a tour of The White House and noticed all of the stiff, trained paintings of first ladies. She set out to bring light to a different view of these women - instead of showing them as idyllic, untouchable figures, she wanted to paint them as human beings, flaws included. She began to use her own image as a way to channel the everyday-qualities of these women. Her self-portraits are at once deeply personal and also inherently historical and political.
